In my last post about the drum I mentioned that I had been inspired by making ceramic work that could have additional interest added to it through sound, as well as combining and constructing together different mediums, along side clay work.

In August last year me and a friend rented a car and took a road trip back to my home land of Scotland. During the week long trip we managed to cram in many places, but my personal highlight was re-visiting a place very special to my heart: The Isle of Mull. As a young child my family used to visit there and, being back there brought back a lot of good memories for me.

One thing I miss immensely from back home is being by the coast. Upon visiting Mull we took a day trip to the island of Staffa, made up of hexagonal columns of volcanic rock. When we got there we had some time to explore the uninhabited island. We visited one if the island's Sea Caves, named Fingal's Cave, after the giant, and found a little beach. From the beach I collected some rope, drift wood and bones found from a dead seal.
On returning to Cambridge, a few months later, my brother got in touch to let me know he was planning on getting married at the end of the year. From the pieces I collected from the place we used to holiday together as children, I knew what I could make for a meaningful wedding present to give to them on the big day.
The piece really satisfied my need to combine materials using terracotta, crank, B17C and porcelain clay bodies, along with melted glass, wood and bone, the found objects giving the bell a further sentimental value. The work is meant to have a spiritual, primitive feel about it. I used the circle throughout to symbolize the eternal commitment and unison of marriage. The string that links the bottom section has been carefully considered so that the link in it is not visible from the front of the piece, so it appears to be an infinite loop, joining different the various elements together as it passes through them. The various elements may be different shapes, but fit together to support one another, as I believe, a good partnership should.
Lizzie has always said she would like a piece of my art work and Dave is amazing at anything percussion related, so for their wedding present I made them a drum!

I was inspired by a book I had seen called "From Mud to Music". I found creating an instrument from clay gave the piece a a new sort of life about it: It could make a sound. I had to learn how to stretch the skin over the top, which was by far the most challenging bit as I had never done anything like that before. I watched YouTube tutorial but none were telling me exactly what I needed to know, so I combined all of my learning and took a leap of faith and, fortunately, it worked out!

I had taken pictures through the making process of the drum and printed the photos and put them in an album that accompanied the drum as part of the gift. Around the middle I carved their names and the date of the wedding and melted glass in the channel I built around the bottom.
At Christmas time, a friend gave me a tiny little jar of chutney in a preserving jar. I have always loved the lid contraptions on these, so decided to dismantle it to try to work out how I could combine it with my own work. After doing some research and gathering some ideas and influences I had a clear idea in my head of the piece I wanted to make, and here it is!

I'm really enjoying the concept of mixing different materials together and intend to show this more in my current work. As the ceramic has to be fired to over 1000°C this is too hot for the other elements to survive. Also the clay body shrinks by about 10% through the firing process so when it came to constructing all the bits together I had my fingers and toes crossed that they would all fit together, so, when they did I was thrilled! I wasn't sure if the ball was going to be able to move, but it can spin around on its axes, which also really pleases me! The bottle is probably my favorite ceramic piece I have made to date.

It wasn't until weeks in to its creation when I was locking my bike up that I glanced down at my keys and noticed the keyring on them was very similar to what I had been making! Something clicked... I had been carrying this around with me the whole time... could this mini bottle have been subliminaly in my mind the whole time?!
This was recommended to me by a fellow ceramicist and was well worth it! The site includes local clay dumps, events and workshops, and holds a huge network of potters situated in the surrounding area.

They have an exhibition every year at Emmanuel College, including the work of 65 different potters. I will be exhibiting some of my work with them from 15-30th August so please do come along if you're in the area and have the chance.
I was particularly attracted to the piece, Mediterranean Sculpture (Orphic Dream), by Jean Arp, 1941.

This image was the best I could find online, as I only took a couple of sketches at the time, rather than a photo, but the piece that I saw was made from terracotta clay and was burnished to such a high standard that it could have passed for pink marble. I really like the idea of a piece being a completely different material than first perceived.

I was also intrigued by how the various artists on display in the centre, including Hans Coper, utilized the plinth and incorporated it in to their piece. The elevation seemed to give the form a greater sense of being. It seemed to make the piece more valuable with a greater sense of power.

A lot of my 2D work uses flat, brightly coloured, graphic, blocky shapes. The sculptures I was looking at appeared to do just this, but in 3D. These were all points I wanted to investigate and explore.

This is what I made.

As the piece gradually took shape I used a serrated steel kidney to initially smooth and join the clay. I noticed that the marks left by the kidney were very gestural and could illustrate some of the making process to the viewer, so I decided to fill them with white slip so they would remain visible and become a feature of the sculpture. The base was made from grey clay with red slip in-laid in to the surface, vice versa of its passenger.

I would love to some how map my fingerprints on this piece, as it has had a hell of a lot surface contact with them to achieve this high shine!
I used the traditional techniques of coiling to make this, along with slip in-lay for the decoration on the outside and mixture of oxides on the inside.

The rim of the pot has been trimmed to an organic shape, as the piece is intended for decorational use. During the Ceramics lessons that I teach, I try to draw my students' attention to the rim of their pot, as this informs the viewer of what to expect from the piece. If the rim is irregular, this could indicate that the pot is decorative, where as if the piece was made for drinking from the rim would be smooth and constant, as the user would be expected to put this to their lips. It can also give an indication of the weight of the piece.

As always, comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated! Let me know what you think!
In this exhibition I have mixed geometric shapes with bright colours to bring my playful and experimental approach to the viewer, in an attempt to rejuvenate traditional methods and techniques, showcasing a range of intaglio and relief printmaking processes, alongside a handcrafted collection of ceramic work.

My most recent creation is the jug that I will show in this post. My aim was to combine a range of techniques to make a functional item. I wanted to keep the strong graphic approach I show with in my prints, using bold colours and shapes.

When building the jug I used pinch pot, coil and slab building techniques. I decided to make simple surface decoration by in-laying coloured slip. When the jug was at the leather-hard stage of drying, I sketched on my design, and used a lino cutting tool to incise the design in to the surface. I then filled these lines with the coloured slip and when that was dry I scraped it back, so it was flush with the surface level.

I wanted to highlight the features in the form of the jug through the slip in-lay design, as well and try to keep and show a balance with in the piece.

This July I was given the opportunity to teach the Ceramics Summer School at Hills Road Sixth Form College. I showed a group of 5 adults a range of techniques and how to use them over the five days. We studied pinch pots, coils, slab building, throwing, slip decoration, press moulds, air traps, glazing techniques, the use of oxides, burnishing and the possibilities of combining glass with ceramic work, to name but a few!

I really enjoyed working with the small group, as it meant each student got lots of attention and encouragement, which made it possible for them to achieve some really great outcomes. They were also really open and responsive to experimentation, and using it to inform their progress over the course. Each person paid attention to the various tutorials they were shown, but it was interesting to watch how they all took my advice in completely different directions.

The 5 day course was split over 2 weeks, with the weekend in between, as I made use of this time to bisque fire the work. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in Week 1 were days allocated for making. We were very lucky with the hot sun outside, which helped to dry the work, ready for it's first firing.

When the students returned on Monday I taught them various glazing techniques, which they were then free to get started with, and continue the following day.

Here are some pictures and videos taken throughout the course (courtesy of Emma Wilshaw).
Call for Entries Exhitition 2014This month my piece, '3 Pillars', was selected for the Cambridge ArtWorks Ltd. Open Call For Entries Exhibition 2014. It was open to the public during the middle two weekend of Open Studios (12th and 13th, 19th and 20th July). A little thumbnail of my work even made it on to the poster for the show!

The exhibition looked really strong and I always enjoy a nosey round the artists' studios at this light and airy location.
The centre is an old church that has been renovated in to a cafe but still has the original nave, where services and events are still held. It has a light, airy, modern feel about it. The site really lent its self to the exhibition, and I really enjoyed making use of the large arch ways in the architecture as frames for my work.

During the Private View I had a chat with the principal of Hills Road Sixth Form College, and we agreed that the large boards will now be on display for all to see, within the college, which is really exciting, and good to know that they will be seen!Sk8ingk8http://www.blogger.com/profile/06357419297663839214noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7989463414076661294.post-73043705419597724612014-07-13T08:02:00.001-07:002014-07-13T08:46:45.589-07:00Changing Rooms with Changing Spaces in the Grafton Centre, CambridgeAs part of their residency within the Grafton Centre, last month, Changing Spaces took over the former H&M shop and issued an open call to students and alumni of Cambridge School of Art to submit a proposal of how they would transform the inside of a fitting room. I was lucky enough to have my proposal chosen!

There were 8 cubicles, the interior of which was designed by 8 different artists. The downstairs of the store was occupied by Blue Contemporary Art Agency, showing chosen works from selected painters. Upstairs was showing film projections, installations and performances by Neuf Film Collective and whole mix of drawings and paintings by various artists. A lot of the work on show had been produced on site, especially for the show, which was open for the public to view as it was in construction, as well as the final, polished exhibition, which was named Mind Your Head.

30 artists were involved in showing their work in total, and it was a really exciting project to be a part of. It was fun working in the space and I got to meet some really interesting people. It was both hectic and thrilling to pull the whole thing together in just a few days, but we did it!

I had spent some time constructing patterns on my computer from reduction lino cuts I had made in the studio. The designs were made to scale then tiled and printed on to A3 sheets. I made my own wheat paste and covered the inside on my fitting room with pattern!

Changing Rooms is
upstairs, towards the back of the building. Connected by a long
passageway, each changing room is confined, segregated and immersed deep
within the heart of consumerism. You are invited to explore these
individual spaces, meet your own reflection, push your level of
visibility, and take control of your narcissistic obsession with the
selfie. Will you succumb to being passive recipients of capitalist
culture? No matter where you go, your reflection is inescapable.
Prepare to be consumed.

The cubicle space as somewhere to display work was an unconventional challenge I hadn't experienced before, but it was really interesting to work in such a small space, with mirror fixtures, reflecting the hypnotic designs. It was definitely an opportunity for a selfie of two that I couldn't resist!
It was great to finally see my designs up on walls, as I've wanted to do something like this for a while now. Being within the changing room felt like taking a step inside my brain! It took us about 5 hours to get there but it was so worth it to be a part of something truly magical. We were blessed with good weather along with some spectacular scenery and surroundings to spend the bank holiday weekend in.

Our camp was set up loosely around an old barn, with an inscription on the fireplace reading 1511, however, the people who now own the barn and know more if its history reckon it was built around 100 years earlier than this. Not much has changed in the interior and it still boasts most of its original fittings inside.
When my friends picked me up in Cambridge, I was quizzed as to why I was bringing so much of my art stuff with me, to which I didn't really have an answer, apart from one of the organisers had told me to bring it! When I got to the site, I was shown the upstairs of the barn. I was so excited because as soon as I saw it I could envisage my work set-up in there and how it would all work!

The original fittings and quirky bits in the structure worked perfectly with the banner from the Faith and Belief installation, and we managed to use the beams and stone walls to our advantage to hook the flags on to. All the pieces seemed to fit together like a jigsaw and I was totally buzzing and couldn't quite believe how perfectly it worked!

The banner filled the doorway shape in the middle of the room and there were just enough flags to go round the perimeter. The rough texture and grey of the stone walls against the crisp white and bright colours with the bright sunshine streaming through the windows reinstated the original concept and thought process behind the project in the first place: comparing my artistic practice to a form of faith, belief or a religion and how it can make you feel the same enlightenment and uplifting effect as a god can have on someone who follows a religion; its all about what you believe in, whether it be a god, art, music. Fact or fiction, pursue what makes you feel happy, chase what makes you feel alive.
I was interested to see the biome constructions that house the plants inside like huge greenhouses, simulating warmer conditions, but mainly excited and intregued to see The Seed sculpture in the heart of one of the buildings in the Eden Project: The Core.

The Biomes at The Eden Project

The sculpture has been carved from a piece of granite that took artist, Peter Randall-Page and his team, two years to find, and two years to carve and weighs a whopping 70 tonnes!

I was blown away by the piece. It was tangiable, tactile, appealing and accessable to and audience of all ages. The way The Seed is displayed, inside a sort of circular white room, tapering up in to a funnel that opens out to a window above, which lights the object, made me feel very small and enforced the realization that nature is all around and should be respected, embraced and protected by man-kind, as it provides us with so much, which, sometimes, we can be blind to.
Back in Cambridge, around about the same time I found out about the Fibonacci sequence, as a result of a conversation at the pub with some friends. I spent a long time the next day researching it and watching various videos explaining about it on youtube.

As a reaction to both of these things I began to note down ideas for a new print. I created a new piece called Fibo-Seed using 2 lino blocks, and six layers: A reduction lino multi block. My bedroom floor became my press, with the pieces hung on a make shift line to dry for each layer after it was hand-burnished on my homemade registration block!
Very exciting to be able to be a small part of this as music has a huge place in my heart. When chatting to my very talented music making friends, although art making and music making are different practices, we can draw huge parallels between the two and identify along the same wavelength and thought process a lot of the time. I find the conversations we have together very organic and motivating, with both parties identifying with topics such as rhythm, repetition and pattern.
The track sampler featuring music from Andy Lemac and Stride can be purchased now from Beatport.
You can pop along to see the show and enjoy a fine cup of coffee at one of the coolest cafes in Cambridge: Hot Numbers, where the show is due to be held.

Feel free to come along to the opening night, it should be good, with most of the artists who made the work there and, more than likely, in high spirits, from 6:30pm on 7th May.
At each event a different artist volunteers to host the event, and come up with a short project for everyone to get involved in.

When Dan Biggs hosted the event a few weeks ago, he gave us the task of decorating the inside of a shoebox however we wanted. We started filling the boxes during the two hours at the cafe, then took them home to complete. Everyone who wanted their shoebox to be a part of the installation to follow dropped their completed box off at the next Drink & Draw event.

With all the boxes, Dan constructed an installation which is now displayed in the window of Elitian Printers on Mill Road for a little goody for passers-by to have a look at. I think each box provides a little insight in to the mind of the artist who created it!

The box I created shows a little mash-up of a few different projects I have made in the past. It includes drawing, etchings, with the use of chine-colle, and paper sculptures. So if you're out and about on Mill Road keep your eyes peeled and you'll be in for a treat!
But
before we kiss goodbye to 2013, I just wanted to post a few snaps from
the Private View of the Christmas Art Fair at the Cambridge Art Salon,
from December 6th last year.

There was a fairly good
turn out and it was nice to share a mince pie and some mulled wine with
friends before we all went off our separate ways for the Christmas
break. I also met some new friends too, which is lovley benefit of being
involved with exhibition Private Views!
Williams Art invited Cambridge artists to submit selections of work
for our seasonal exhibition: the response was overwhelming and the panel
sifted through more than 200 submissions.

Over the next four weeks, we will be showing a selection of works:
each piece will only be on the walls for a few days and we will be
regularly changing the mix of work, so do pop in at least once a week if
you can.

The gallery is open every day until 24 December. If you see a work
that you'd like to buy when the desk is unmanned (see times below),
simply text us on 07525 269804 and we'll reserve it for you.

Our final MAMFAMA show has been and gone, but not without some great feedback from everyone who attended, of whom I would like to thank, A LOT, for coming along, and I hope you all enjoyed seeing the show as much as I did being a part of it! Here are some snaps of how the gallery looked when the show was hung and ready to go.
My certificate of completion of the course was sent to me and I graduated with a Merit on Tuesday 1st Oct. It was a great day, accompanied by fellow Printmakers and my mum and brother who, very kindly, traveled down from Scotland to share the moment with me.
Through being interviewed for James Churchill's short documentary video, Romsey Rules, not only did I manage to be included in the video but I also was lucky enough to bag myself a nice little commission from James himself for a small collection of my flags from the Faith and Belief series.

To photograph them I decided to take them to the graveyard behind the Anglia Ruskin University building and capture them in an outdoors, natural environment.
